Your Community's Site Might Not Exist to AI

Search Engine Journal laid out a test worth stealing this week: paste a distinctive line from your community page into a chatbot and ask it to find the exact match. If your URL comes back, retrieval works and your problem is somewhere else. If it doesn't, you've found the actual issue, and no amount of SEO tinkering fixes it.

Here's why this matters more than your rank tracker. Half the industry is still staring at Google Search Console like it's the only scoreboard, refreshing rankings for "apartments in [submarket]" while prospective renters are asking ChatGPT to compare pet policies and move-in specials directly. GSC tells you nothing about that conversation. It can't. There's no dashboard for a model that never crawled you in the first place.

So the fix isn't a new keyword strategy. It's a diagnostic. Run the snippet test on your floor plan pages, your amenity pages, your blog posts about the neighborhood. If the AI can't retrieve them, you're not losing a ranking fight, you're not even in the room. That's a content and structure problem, not a bid problem, and it means the budget you're spending to "win AI search" is being spent on the wrong layer of the stack entirely.

Worth saying plainly: this is a starting point, not a verdict. A page showing up in one chatbot's retrieval doesn't mean every model treats it the same way, and the source didn't claim otherwise. But it's a five-minute test that costs nothing, and right now most marketing teams haven't even run it once.
