Snapchat's New Attribution Model Is Coming for Your Reported ROAS

Snapchat isn't the first platform your prospects live on, but plenty of media plans still carry a Snap line item, especially for lease-up campaigns chasing a younger renter. Marketing Dive reports Snap is rolling out a "Unified Attribution" capability globally, a new measurement model meant to simplify how the platform counts conversions. In a test period, Mohegan Sun Online Casino reportedly saw ROAS improve by nearly 90 percent. That's a casino, not a leasing office, but the mechanism is the same everywhere it ships: change how a platform counts credit, and every dashboard fed by that platform changes with it.

Here's the part that should get your attention. A big jump in reported ROAS doesn't always mean your ads got better overnight. Sometimes it means the attribution window got wider, or the model started crediting view-throughs it used to ignore, or cross-device matching got more generous. None of that is fraud. It's just math, and it's math your agency's monthly recap runs through without necessarily flagging the change. If your Snap numbers suddenly look 40 percent better next quarter, you want to know why before you tell your VP it's because of the new carousel ad you swapped in.

The source doesn't say when this hits every account or whether it's already live on yours. That's exactly the kind of gap you close on your next call, not after the next QBR when the numbers have already shifted and nobody remembers why.

Ask your vendor
  1. 01Has Unified Attribution already been applied to our account, and if so, as of what date did the reporting model change?
  2. 02What was our Snap attribution window before this change, and what is it now, click-through and view-through separately?
  3. 03Can you pull a side-by-side ROAS report for the same 30-day period under the old model and the new one, so we can see the delta before it hits a monthly recap?
  4. 04Does Unified Attribution change how Snap leads get de-duped against our CRM's other paid sources, and will that shift the lead count we already reported this quarter?
  5. 05If reported conversions rise without a change in spend or creative, what's the specific mechanism you'd point to, wider window, cross-device matching, or something else?
  6. 06Is this change specific to Snap, or are you seeing similar attribution shifts from other platforms in our mix that we should get ahead of now?
