Renters Are Asking AI, Not Google. You Need Answers.
Digible's latest Digible Dude episode has Kristen Powers and Cherry Johnson talking about how generative engine optimization, GEO, is starting to sit alongside traditional SEO, and why the shift matters for how renters actually find you now.
Here's the uncomfortable part. A prospective renter doesn't type "2 bed apartment near me" into Google anymore and scroll ten blue links. They ask ChatGPT or Gemini what neighborhood fits their budget and commute, and the AI just tells them. No click. No listing page visit. No chance for your carefully built meta description to do its job.
That's a real problem if your entire content strategy was built for a search results page that's slowly becoming furniture nobody sits on. Ranking number one on Google means less when the answer gets summarized before the searcher ever sees your URL.
The fix isn't throwing out SEO. Powers and Johnson's point is that the fundamentals, clean site structure, real content, answers to actual renter questions, still matter. They're just feeding a different reader now, one that's a language model deciding whether to mention you at all. Structured data, clear factual content about your community, and pages that answer specific questions directly are what get pulled into an AI answer. Vague brand copy about "resort-style living" is not.
If your content team is still optimizing purely for keyword density and backlinks, you're polishing a doorknob on a house that's getting a new front entrance built next to it. Worth listening to the full episode before you find out the hard way, through a lead report that's suddenly quieter than it should be.
