Google Says Budget Changes No Longer Reset Your Ads

For years, "don't touch the campaign, it'll reset the learning period" was the universal excuse for why your agency wouldn't move budget when a property suddenly needed leads fast. Google Ads product manager Tal Akabas said on October 15 that excuse is losing its teeth. On steady campaigns, bids now scale in proportion to new targets instead of the whole account lurching back into a multi-day guessing phase. Re-engagement mode, which handles that transition more gracefully, has reached Performance Max. Search and Shopping are next, though there's no date attached to that yet.

For an apartment operator this is not a trivia question, it's a budget lever. Leasing spend is seasonal and sometimes panicked: a slow Tuesday in February looks nothing like move-out season in July, and a property that's suddenly 200 basis points under occupancy needs its PMax budget to move now, not after a week of "settling." If the reset penalty is actually gone, your agency has a lot less excuse to sandbag your mid-month requests to shift spend toward the units bleeding the most.

It also means the monthly report you get needs to change. If performance dips are no longer explainable by "the algorithm is relearning," your vendor needs a better story when a budget bump doesn't produce leads. That's either good news, because you'll finally see real cause and effect, or bad news, because the comfortable excuse just evaporated.

Ask your vendor
  1. 01Which of our PMax campaigns are already running in re-engagement mode, and which ones aren't yet?
  2. 02Walk me through the last budget change you made on our account. Did bids scale proportionally or did performance dip the way it used to after a reset?
  3. 03Are you still pausing or slow-rolling target changes based on the old learning-period assumption? If so, on which campaigns and why?
  4. 04Our Search and Shopping campaigns aren't covered by this change yet. What's your plan for those once Google extends re-engagement mode to them?
  5. 05If a budget increase doesn't produce more leads within a week, what's your new explanation, now that 'it's relearning' isn't on the table?
