Google's Choice Screen Is Coming for Your Search Budget

The UK Competition and Markets Authority has a new plan for Android and Chrome: a choice screen with 12 slots where users pick their default search and AI tools. Per PPC Land, the revised proposal adds AI assistants to that lineup and requires clear attribution when an answer pulls from a publisher's content. This is a UK regulatory move, not a US one, but Google tends to build one product architecture and roll it out wherever the lawyers let it, so treat this as an early warning, not a foreign news item.

Here's why a leasing marketer should care before this ever touches a US screen. Your paid search strategy for apartment hunters assumes Google is the front door. If a chunk of Android and Chrome traffic starts routing through an AI assistant that summarizes availability, pricing, and amenities before a renter ever clicks an ad, your cost-per-lead math changes and your website's SEO work gets a new middleman to satisfy. Attribution requirements could actually help you, if they mean your community's own content gets credited instead of scraped and repackaged anonymously. Or they could just add another format your web team has to optimize for on top of Google Business Profile, ILS listings, and whatever comes next.

Nothing here has a US rollout date. That matters, because it means you have a window to ask questions now instead of scrambling later.

Ask your vendor
  1. 01If Google rolls out a similar AI-assistant choice screen in the US, which of our current search campaigns lose visibility first, and what's the estimated percentage of our Android/Chrome traffic at risk?
  2. 02Are you tracking how our organic listings and paid ads currently appear inside Google's AI Overviews, and can you show us that data for our top three markets?
  3. 03What specific changes would you make to our Google Ads bidding strategy if a meaningful share of search traffic shifted to an AI-assistant default instead of classic search results?
  4. 04Does our current SEO and content plan account for AI attribution formatting, meaning content structured so an assistant can cite us by name instead of summarizing us anonymously?
  5. 05What's our contingency budget allocation if paid search CPCs on Android inventory move more than 15% within two quarters of any choice-screen rollout?
  6. 06Which other platforms are you watching for similar choice-screen or AI-default mandates, and what's your monitoring cadence, not just 'we're watching it'?
