Google Just Moved Its Links Higher, Not Yours
Google is reshuffling how links show up in AI Mode and AI Overviews. Inline links are moving higher in the response, and the Preferred Sources carousel, the row of sites Google decides deserve a click, is getting bigger. Search Engine Journal has the details.
Here's the part that should bother you. A prospect searching "best apartments near [your submarket]" used to scroll past an AI summary to get to listings. Now the summary itself is doing more of the steering, and it's steering toward whoever Google decided is a preferred source. That's rarely your property website. It's usually Apartments.com, a local news roundup, or a review aggregator that outranked you years ago and never looked back.
You don't control whether Google picks your site as a preferred source. What you do control is whether your website, your Google Business Profile, and your reviews give an AI model something clean to summarize. If your unit page buries pricing three clicks deep, or your amenities list reads like a lease addendum, you're making it easy for the AI to quote someone else instead.
Start checking what AI Overviews actually say about your property today. Search your own community name and see who's cited. If it's not you, that's not a ranking problem you fix with better meta descriptions. It's a content problem, and it's yours to solve before the next algorithm update makes it worse.
