Google Caps Display Spend While Killing It on Search

Starting October 15, Google Ads lets you set a daily spend cap on Display and partner inventory as a percentage of your average budget. Low priority placements finally get a leash. Then in February 2027, Google is retiring Display Expansion on Search altogether.

Here's why that first part exists: Search campaigns have been quietly spilling into Display and partner sites, and most marketing directors found out the way you find out about anything in this business, by noticing a number was off and digging for an hour. The new percentage cap is Google admitting the leak was real enough to need a valve.

So two things are happening at once. Google is giving you a tool to stop the bleed now, and announcing that the pipe causing it goes away later. That's not contradictory, it's a company managing its own transition without breaking budgets in the meantime.

The move for you is simple. Pull your Search campaign settings this week and check whether Display Expansion is on and what share of spend it's actually eating. If it's meaningful, set the percentage cap now instead of waiting for February 2027 to do it for you. You want to control when and how that budget gets reallocated, not have Google flip a switch and leave you explaining a lead dip to your regional with no warning.

One thing is unknown: whether Google will auto-migrate that freed-up Display budget back into Search bids, or just hand it back to you to redeploy. Worth asking your rep now, because "we'll figure it out in 2027" is not a plan.
