Google Ads Will Let You Cap Display Spend. Ask If Yours Is Set.
Here's the setup. Google Ads now lets advertisers rank which channels they want spend to go to, and cap how much of a campaign's budget can land on Display and partner network inventory, as a percentage. The company is calling it "best-effort," which is Google's way of saying it'll try, not promise. Still, it's a real lever that didn't exist before, and it's one most multifamily accounts have never touched.
Here's why that's your money, not some abstract advertiser's. Display and partner network placements are where a lot of junk clicks live: content farms, apps, sites with an inventory slot and no renter anywhere near them. Your Google Search campaigns are usually fine, people typing "apartments in [your submarket]" are actual prospects. But if your agency has Display mixed into the same campaign without caps, Google's algorithm will happily spend your daily budget on cheap impressions that look efficient on a cost-per-click report and terrible on a cost-per-lease report. You've seen this before: the month leads spike but tours don't, and nobody can explain why.
This is a settings question, not a strategy question. Either the cap exists in the account or it doesn't. Either someone configured channel ranking after this rolled out, or your campaigns are running exactly like they did last quarter. Your next call with your agency or in-house specialist should settle this in about four minutes.
What a good answer sounds like: a specific percentage cap on Display and partner spend, a date it was set, and a screen share showing the setting live in the account. Bonus points if they can tell you what percentage of spend was going to Display before the cap, versus now. A good answer has numbers in it and takes thirty seconds to produce.
What an evasive answer sounds like: "we're keeping an eye on that," or "Google handles a lot of this automatically," or anything that doesn't name a percentage. If they tell you Display spend doesn't matter because it's such a small slice of the budget, ask them to show you the slice. It's usually bigger than they think, and it's usually your money paying for it.
- 01What percentage cap have you set on Display and partner network spend in our account, and on what date was it set?
- 02Can you share your screen and show me the channel ranking settings live, not a report from last week?
- 03What share of our total Google Ads spend went to Display or partner inventory in the last 90 days, before any cap was applied?
- 04Since Google calls this best-effort, how will you confirm the cap is actually holding instead of drifting back up next month?
- 05Are our Search and Display campaigns separated, or still bundled in a way that makes this cap harder to apply cleanly?
- 06If Display spend drops, where are you reallocating that budget, and which campaign will show the impact first?
