Google Ads Now Lets You Pick Winners. So Pick.
Google Ads is rolling out channel prioritization and budget allocation controls, giving advertisers direct say over how spend splits across Search, Performance Max, and other campaign types, according to Search Engine Journal.
For years the honest answer to "why is Performance Max eating my Search budget" was: because Google decided it should. PMax is a black box that routes spend wherever its model thinks it'll convert, and if you've ever watched your branded search impressions dip while PMax quietly ate the budget, you already know how that story ends. This update means you can finally set the priority yourself instead of trusting the algorithm's judgment about which apartment searcher deserves your money.
Here's what to actually do with it. Pull your last 90 days of campaign data and look at cost-per-lead by channel, not just conversions, before you touch any new setting. If Search has been quietly outperforming PMax on quality while getting starved on budget, this is your chance to fix that without fighting the platform's defaults. If PMax has actually been carrying its weight, don't just rebalance for the sake of rebalancing. The point isn't to punish PMax, it's to stop letting a black box make a decision that affects your lease-up numbers.
Treat this as a forced audit, not a settings tweak. Most teams haven't looked hard at their channel mix since they set it up and walked away. Now there's no excuse.
