Google Ads May Be Buying You Worse Traffic, Not Better

Here's the uncomfortable question PPC Land is asking: does Quality Score, the thing Google built in 2005 to reward relevant ads, still actually run the show? Two practitioners quoted in the piece say no. They say "budget-limited" status, Google's internal flag for accounts that could spend more if they had more money, is now shaping bids more than how well your ad matches the search. Translation: Google may be nudging budget-limited accounts toward spend over fit.

For a leasing team, that's not an abstract ad-tech squabble. Your Google Ads budget is almost certainly budget-limited at some point in the month, especially mid-cycle when you're chasing a vacancy spike. If spend status is quietly outweighing relevance in how your bids get placed, you could be paying for more clicks from people who were never going to tour, while your cost per qualified lead creeps up and nobody can tell you exactly why. The dashboard still says "clicks are up." Your leasing office says the opposite.

This also matters because nobody is announcing a fix date. PPC Land doesn't report Google confirming a change or a rollout timeline, just two experienced buyers raising a flag. That means the burden is on your vendor to show their own evidence, not wait for Google's blog post.

Ask your vendor
  1. 01What percentage of our account's impressions this month were served while flagged budget-limited, and can you pull that report live?
  2. 02What's our current average Quality Score by top-spending keyword, and has it moved in the last 90 days?
  3. 03Are we on Target CPA, Target ROAS, or Maximize Conversions right now, and when did we last test an alternative against it?
  4. 04Show me cost per qualified lead for the same keyword set in the last 30 days versus 90 days ago. Did it go up while clicks went up?
  5. 05If we raised daily budget by 20%, would you expect cost per lead to improve, hold, or worsen, and why?
  6. 06Which specific negative keywords or audience exclusions did you add this quarter to protect lead quality, not just volume?
