ChatGPT Ads Just Got a Reason to Take It Seriously
OpenAI is building out ChatGPT Ads with a new visual format, actual measurement tools, and brand suitability testing. Translation: they're done being a novelty and want a real line item in your media plan.
Right now, if you're running anything on ChatGPT, you're basically flying on vibes. No real reporting, no brand safety guardrails, nothing you could put in a board deck next to your Google and Meta numbers. That's the thing OpenAI is trying to fix, because advertisers with actual budgets don't write checks for "trust us."
Here's why a marketing director should care before this is obviously a thing. Search behavior is already shifting. Renters are asking ChatGPT "find me a 2-bed in [submarket] under $1,800" instead of typing it into Google, and that traffic doesn't show up in your paid search reporting because there's nothing there to buy yet. Once there is, every ILS and every competitor in your market will want in on the same inventory, and the early CPMs will look nothing like they do in year two.
You don't need a strategy deck on this. You need five hundred bucks and a test. Pick one floor plan, one market, run it for a month once the measurement tools are live, and see if the leads look like anything. If it's noise, you've lost lunch money. If it's not, you're ahead of every regional still waiting for a webinar to tell them this exists.
What's still unknown: pricing, targeting options, and whether lease-up budgets will see anything worth measuring before next year.
