ChatGPT Ads Isn't a Line Item on Your Google Budget

Search Engine Journal ran five questions marketers should answer before shifting budget into ChatGPT Ads. Good list. The best one, distilled: what is this channel's job, and whose money is paying for it to find out.

Here's the failure mode that's already forming at properties everywhere. Someone in leadership reads "AI search is the future," pulls ten grand out of a paid search campaign that's been converting leads at a known cost for eighteen months, and drops it into ChatGPT Ads with no benchmark for what success even looks like. That's not a test. That's a hunch wearing a budget line.

Paid search on Google has years of data behind it. You know your cost per lead, your cost per lease, which keywords actually fill units versus which ones just look busy in the dashboard. ChatGPT Ads has none of that history, for anyone, in any market. Treating it like a swap-in replacement for a channel with a track record is like benching your leasing consultant who closes tours to give more shifts to the new hire who hasn't taken a call yet.

If you want to try it, fine. Give it its own budget, ideally from testing dollars or brand spend, not from the channel keeping your funnel full. Set one metric you'll actually check in ninety days. Cost per lead, cost per tour, whatever's honest for your market. And write down, before you spend a dollar, what "this worked" means. Otherwise you're not running a test. You're just moving money around and calling it strategy.
