Apple Just Quietly Defunded Part of Your Ad Targeting
Two weeks ago Apple pushed iOS 27. Buried in it: a block on data collection and ad serving for a handful of programmatic identity vendors on Safari, including The Trade Desk's Unified ID 2.0, LiveRamp, ID5, Permutive and Audigent. AdExchanger is now reporting Apple's plans go further, with hundreds more data companies on the list. Nobody sent a press release to marketing directors. You'd only find out by asking.
Here's why that matters to a leasing budget specifically. If your agency or in-house team is running programmatic display or CTV, there's a real chance part of that spend relies on one of these IDs to target renters and measure whether the ad actually did anything. Safari isn't a rounding error either. A meaningful slice of prospects browsing apartment listings on an iPhone are doing it in Safari. When the ID breaks, you don't get an error message. You get quietly worse targeting and reporting that still looks clean, because the dashboard doesn't know what it's missing.
That's the part that should bother you. Nobody is going to call and say "your numbers are now less trustworthy on Apple devices." The CPL might even look fine while the actual decisioning behind it gets dumber. You find out eventually, usually when occupancy softens and nobody can explain why the media mix "performed" the whole time.
This is the exact kind of change that gets buried in a monthly recap as a footnote, if it shows up at all. So put it on the agenda yourself.
